One of the oddest passages in The
Language of Tears describes the
work of British psychologist John Sloboda,
who studied the connection
between music and crying. First
Sloboda identified musical pieces that
Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, for
example, or the opening six bars of
Rachmaninoff's Symphony no. 2. Then
he tried to figure out why these pieces
produced such an abundant harvest of
hankies. He concluded that in some
cases, such as the Tchaikovsky piece,
listeners were moved by the story
associated with the music. But he also argued that there was a specific
emotional language embedded in
