No matter how many times we experience it, June is always a
surprise. Flowers shoot up from the ground, reminding us of their beautiful
colors. Trees cover their branches with leaves, making us remember how
graceful they looked like before the long, dark months of winter. The
warm weather in June causes animals to shed their fur. Meanwhile, skin
makes a reappearance as humans - intoxicated by the heat - emerge from
clothing they disappeared into 6 months earlier.
June is end-of-school and pre-vacation. It's a time of relaxing and
rewarding ourselves for what we accomplished. Soon, the job of
vacationing will begin, but for right now, for this moment, all that's
required is a big, tired smile on the porch.
All things are reborn in June and that includes Boomers
International. We've worked hard at updating the sites and providing you with new
content. We've got a new crew in place and are dedicated to giving
you the best site dedicated to Baby Boomers on the web.

SECTION TWO - MOTHERS DAY
FATHER'S DAY - JUNE 18th
When he was a child, a friend of mine used to go hiking in the
woods with his brother and sister and father. The group would
pack up food and water and bandages and head off for the day.
Sometimes they followed the trails that were marked, other
times they used nature's clues to lead them to more interesting
places.
It was one of those unmarked journeys that led them to a place in
the forest so overgrown with trees and vegetation that the sky was
barely visible above. In the center, nearly circled by water, was an
enormous black tree with huge, knarled branches. Their father
decided that it was the perfect place to eat lunch.
The group crossed the land bridge leading to the tree. Once they
were nearer to it, they saw that the branches were thick and low to the
ground, spaced about a foot apart: it was almost inviting them to climb
it. The children dropped their packs on the ground and started
hoisting themselves onto the lowest branches.
"Wait," their father said and they jumped down.
"Wait for me," their father said again. Then they watched as he
began to make his way slowly up the tree's thick trunk. Holding on to
the base, he bounced on every branch as he climbed, testing each to
see if it could hold his weight. "Not this one," he called down. "And
stay away from these." Halfway to the top he called to them again,
"No farther than here."
Their father came down and my friend and his brother and sister
began their climb. The kids could watch their dad as they moved along
the branches and were careful to avoid the ones he'd warned about.
They went halfway up the tree before they stopped. They were
exhilarated by what they could see from so high up - the whole
forest stretched before them. Knowing their father was just below
- only a shout away - had given them the courage to go farther
than they ever would have gone alone.
Happy Father's Day from Boomers International

SECTION JUNE GRADUATIONS - POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE
All of us have graduated from somewhere. None of us have escaped
schooling no matter how hard we tried. Most of us also have children who
have been in grade school, middle school, high school, and hopefully
have become college graduates and beyond. It is always a time of pride and
joy.
I remember when my two children were young and graduated from their
pre-kindergarten classes. My daughter was awarded the Brooke Shields
Award; my son received the Albert Einstein Award. Their mom and dad were
filled with pride and joy. Whether or not they lived up to their
award's namesakes I will not reveal on the grounds that they might kill me.
That very same winner of the Albert Einstein award recently graduated
from the University of Maryland.. The Secretary of State, Madeline
Albright, gave the commencement address. It was a day to remember forever. It
was a day of pomp and circumstance and celebration.
I have a neighbor who is in his mid-seventies. He recently told me
that he had just gotten his degree from the local Community College. He
said that his children and his grandchildren were filled with pride and
joy.
Happy Graduation.

SECTION FOUR: SUMMER - TEENS - AND CARS
Summer. Teenagers particularly love the summertime. It is beach
time. It is car time. It is wind in your hair time. Time to put down the
convertible top on your car - and just head out to have some fun with
friends.
A disturbing statistic: The number 1 cause of teenage death is
automobile accidents. Homicide and suicide are numbers 2 and 3
respectively.
The Bureau of Statistics puts the number of teen automobile fatalities
at over 30,000 yearly. Seventy percent of those deaths occur when the
teen does not have on his seat belt. This is outrageous. It has been
proven that the use of a seat belt would cut down the number of deaths
and serious injuries by 50 percent.
Many states are making seat belt use a primary offense - as opposed
to - you must be doing something else wrong to get a summons for
not wearing your seat belt. It is a step in the right direction.
We, as parents must take the next step. We can make sure, to the
best of our abilities, that our sons and daughters are buckled up. It is
the least we can do.
I recommend a booklet written by a mother and daughter. It is about
the daughter's NEAR fatal car crash - but a seat belt saved her life.
It's called I'M ALIVE. You can check it out at Teen Safety - please do.
The teenager you save could be yours.
Have a safe and happy summer. Put on your seat belt.
