June 1st, the beginnig of huricane season.
I posted this to a new member of the other boomer group. The thought
of hurricane season arriving brings back bad memories indeed.
While I make a joke of the hurricane kit it is really not funny. A
good sense of humor helps prevents insanity.
My wife and I are actually lucky to be alive. When Hurricane Charley
hit we had less than a half hour to dig in. We went to a community
clubhouse to ride out the storm. When we went into the clubhouse it
was a two story building. When we came out it was a one story
building. We were one mile on the east wall of the hurricane, not a
place you want to be. 145 MPH sustained winds and gusts to 185 MPH.
About a half hour into the storm the second floor of the building
started to come apart, the water was pouring through the ac vents and
and down the staircase. We were lucky the storm was moving fast and
past within an hour and a half. I don't think we would have survived
a slow moving one.
45 of us survived in that building. When we came out after the storm
past it was total destruction. The city looked like it had been
bombed. We went from a high tech society to cave dweller in an hour
and a half.
We had no power and no water for 26 days and it was 95 degrees. We
relied totally on the relief agencies. One local gas station managed
to get going on generators and that was our restroom for weeks. To
take a bath or shower we had to drive a half our south to a friends
house. He had no power but he had water. The only source of info was
a battery operated radio.
President Bush came for a visit and was about two miles from our home
and while the whole country probably knew he was here nobody in our
area did.
The city has been mostly rebuilt but the mental and financial scars
are still there. This season is supposed to very active with storms
again. My wife and I don't say too much about it to each other but is
like waiting for another war wondering if you can survive the next
one.
Sometimes hanging on to your sense of humor is all you have left.
Trying to explain the experience to people who haven't been there is
very difficult. The stories and pics on the news really don't tell
the story. You would have to be there to really know. It is not
something you would wish on anybody.
