Question
Hi. My name is Anne and I am doing a project for school.
(11th grade). My topic is baby boomers.
I have specifically chosen Madonna
(music) Princess Diana (culture/volunteerism)
and Bill Gates (technology/entrepreneur) for my thesis.
I am researching how each has affected the
culture of our global community.
If you have any information
or sites you think would be useful to me,
I would surely appreciate any input.
In advance, thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Anne

Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955
with the name William Henry Gates III. He was
also nicknamed Trey and is known at work as
the "Gator". Bill Gates grew up in Seattle,
Washington with his family. His family was
wealthy and was very competitive in anything
they did. His father, William Gates Sr., was
a "prominent" attorney and his mother, Mary,
served on the Board of Directors on many
organizations, including United Way.
Bill Gates also had two sisters, Kristi
and Libby. Libby now has two children
who call him Uncle Bill.
Bill Gates started junior high at Lakeside,
an exclusive all boys school in Seattle.
Lakeside was one of the first schools to
get a computer in 1968, and Bill and his
friends were interested in it. He became
friends with Paul Allen, who also loved
computers. Bill Gates was very smart
but "nerdy" at school where he became
"obsessed" with technology.
Bill Gates teamed with Paul Allen and
two other classmates to form The
Lakeside Programmers Group.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen contacted MITS,
a computer electronics place, when they
created BASIC, a computer programming
code. He then went to Harvard University
when he was twenty years old.
In Hawaii in 1994, Bill married Melinda ,
who was a Product Manager at Microsoft.
They had a baby girl, Jennifer Katherine,
on April 26, 1996. They currently live in
Bellevue, Washington where he is interested
in biotechnology and is on the boards of the
Darwin Molecular and the Icos Corporation.
He has written the book 'The Road Ahead' but
is also an avid reader and likes to play bridge
and golf.
Bill Gates has accepted many awards
including the National Medal of Technology
from President Bush.
Bill Gate's wealth has gone up and up and
is now approximately 48.5 billion which
makes him the richest man in the world.
I do believe that all three personality,
Princess Diana, Madonna and Bill Gates
contribute and change our society.

Question
What are the top 10% on-line service Web sites that Baby
Boomers visit?
Boomers International gets several thousand visitors
per month.
What do Baby Boomers like and dislike about CONTENT
on Web sites?
Answer
Boomers like mostly anything to do with oldies musics,
nostalgic & old timer shows on TV and radio.
They also like to search for their old friends from high
school or long lost loves.
They love to read about themselves or anything to
do with their generation.
They do not like
1) Obscenity.
2) Long and winding story - they do not have time to
read.
3) Being told or suggested that they might be too old,
dumb and ignorant.
4) Technical difficulty in using the web site.
They like simple and easy to navigate and
easy to follow web site.

Question
Why is it that during the hippie era everyone
was into drugs?
Answer
During the late 50's, there was a mass of an individual
and spiritual movement and various researches conducted
about Eastern religious, and psychological aspects of
human potential. Those that want to reach higher human
consciousness were experimenting with Yoga and meditation.
Drugs were also used as one of the experimental vehicles to
reach higher consciousness or higher realm of possibility
(get high ...)
In the 60s, many of the hippies lived in commune or shared
living quarters and they were trusting of their fellow hipppy
who use drugs so they also participated in this uncontrolled
experiment. It was one form of freedom and self-expression.
One form of rebellion. It was the symbol of anti-establishment,
living free and feeling high. This is my opinion and may not
be 100% accurate. Please feel free to post yours..
Question
Please tell me something about the community of
hippies life in the mountain(a backward village)
according to the book"enoch's place"by Joyce.
The social background, when, how and why do
the hippies go into the mountain, and what is
their life like. Why are they called 'hippies'?
They are so different from the hippies in the city.
Answer
I have not read the book, "Enoch's Place"
but judging from the real-life experiences from
the late 50s and 60s, one can derive definitions
for hippies and they can be varied based on
several sources.
One of the sources that seemed to be describing the
reasons why hippies go to the mountain or rather
describing the ..
Cratis Williams (1911-1985) was a serious researcher
of southern Appalachian social and cultural history.
His dissertation, The Southern Mountaineer in Fact
and Fiction (New York University, 1961), is a major
contribution to scholarship.
In his dissertation, Williams came to the
conclusion that the mountaineer "turns out to be a rather
complex individual when we examine him closely."
The mountain lifestyle and city lifestyle are totally different
because of the surrounding and the environment one live
with day-to-day. In the mountain there is such a natural
beauty and the greenery. It is also peaceful and provide a
sanctuary and spirituality that one seeks and can obtain
from living in such a place. Hippies in the city are living
in the middle of society and more established and structured
lifestyle. They are not totally separating from societal
and everyday living.
According to the author of the book, "The Way of the Hippy"
from "Hippies From A to Z" by Skip Stone ....
"To be a hippie you must believe in peace as
the way to resolve differences among peoples,
ideologies and religions. The way to peace is
through love and tolerance. Loving means accepting
other as they are, giving them freedom to express
themselves and not judging them based on appearances.
This is the core of the hippie philosophy"
you can read more about it on his web site.

Question
I am 49, my husband is 60...we are raising two young grandsons
whom we have adopted...I would be interested in knowing
if there are any statistics showing the growing number of
grandparents raising grandchildren...and how many of us
are boomers...
Answer
According to 2 studies, the numbers are approximately
4-5 millions. One study cited that currently there
are over 4 million and the other study stated that
there are about 5 million children in the United
States that live with their grandparents. Out of
those numbers, more than one third of these children
live with grandparents without their own parents.
We will post links for Grandparents' community in
the near future.

Do you have any concrete information (i.e., in 1999 1 million baby
boomers purchased 2nd homes in resort communities...etc.)?
Answer
Question
If you know any sites were I could find some Gen x stat's or
marketing to gen x that would be very kind of you.
Answer
We will conduct a research and post what we find on this
page in the future.
Generation Xers are approximately 93 million Americans
born between 1961 and 1981; and age in 1996, 15 to 35.
Gen Xers want to discover interesting products that fit
with the image of self that they are creating.
They are pragmatic and very concern about environment.
Emphasis is on realistic control of their life.
They are group oriented and bonded well with friends
and are protective of their groups.
Gen Xers are born with the ideas of diversity and
are generation of a very diversed group of cohorts.
They are Street-Savvy and survivors. Gen Xers
group have survived psychedelic parents, divorces,
one-parent families, step families, both parents working,
razor blades in their Halloween candy, latchkey lives,

Questions
I would like to find some websites that would provide me with
info on the differences in prices from the 1940's to present...such
as what a hamburger cost in 1940's verses now...or what a coke or
pair of jeans cost back then. Prices of the common things
that everyone used then and now. If you can help that would be great.
