      HAPPY NEW YEAR

SECTION J: SEARCH FOR MEANINGS OF LIFE

      RESOURCES FOR SPIRITUALITY:

What is the meaning of life? What are our priorities, our moral standing and our responsibility? What is our purpose in life and living? These are questions facing us as we are getting older and for some, the time when we question the priorities that we held dear when we were younger. As we get older, some of us find that friends and loved ones are departing to another world and no longer with us. This is the time that some of us start to re-examine our priorities and our purpose in life.

      MIDLIFE CRISIS:

To some, 30 is the crucial time of their life, to others it can start at 40+. Psychologically, and sometimes physically, we think that we are past our prime and question our accomplishments. Disappointment, disillusionment or dissatisfying experiences seem more unbearable. This is the time when a path can lead to a different turn. Some marriages suffer, some get better. Self-fulfillment and a yearning feeling for freedom can take over the 'togetherness' of married life. How we deal with it is different from one person to another. Whatever path we take, there will be obvious consequences. The solutions and action we take at this point in our lives may not be permanent ones. Sometimes the solutions and actions we choose can bring about other problems, but many feel that it is the time they must make that turn.

      EMPTY NESTERS:

A lonely time in our life that can A lonely time in our lives that can be turned into a more rewarding time. The most important people in our lives for more than 18 years are grown and ready to move out and away from our daily life. This is the time of life that can be both painful and relieving at the same time. Painful for the "missing" or "empty" feelings we feel in our heart...but relieved from the pressures of responsibility and the daily rituals of caring and tending the household. How are we preparing to face this confusing time? We can turn this into a positive and rewarding time. We can enjoy ourselves by slowing down, directing our energy inward. Fix the house, volunteer, go back to school, go back to work or travel. Get the dog, the cat, the bird, or retire to the county. Pets will never replace the kids, but they love you unconditionally. I know of people who adopt a needy child, or become foster parents to needy children. Whatever we choose to do, these are choices that we are free to make. We can take action to get out of the doldrums. Get active and get out into the world!

      THE CAREGIVERS:

Time flies ... seasons change.. Some of us are at a pivotal point in our lives, as we begin to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We worked hard and long to raise family. We saved for retirement and look forward to our economic freedom. Our thoughts now turn towards caring for ourselves. However, some of us are facing another challenge that is part of the cycle of life--aging parents needs loving care and constant attention. Financial and emotional drain can turn this stage of our life into trying times.
