Hi Sandi,
You do have one ambitious plan! It will take much longer than you anticipate, however, you should be able to make it. I have done a similar trip from San Diego to LA. (I live in San Diego). If you leave San Diego early on Friday (before 7 am), you will miss most of the traffic. The views from Santa Monica and Malibu are spectacular. Remember, September is the hottest month in southern California. Enjoy!
