Thank you for the compliment~ It is a work of love to maintain this site!
Driving down PCH from San Francisco (and occasionally on US Highway 101) to San Diego is a therapeutic trip in itself. You will get most of the solitude and nature sceneries from San Francisco all the way down to Santa Cruz, if you drive on PCH. If you go inland and drive down Highway 101, IT IS HORRIBLE!! The traffic jams, commuters on the roads and commercialization. etc. If you decide to drive down from SF to San Jose on 280, it is a little better. It is a beautiful highway.

To drive on PCH from Santa Cruz down to Monterey to Big Sur - You need to check the weather condition at the time that you are planning to take off. 25 Feb is still cool and sometimes we still get some rain here. That portion of PC from Carmel to Big Sur to Cambria sometimes is close due to landslide and wet weather. Otherwise it is a great drive. If you start in SF in the afternoon then you should stop in Monterey-Carmel area for the night. Driving at night alone on PCH1 along the coast IS PRETTY DARK and scarey LOL. You will miss all the sceneries anyway.

After you decide to drive from Carmel either in land on 101 or PCH1 you will get to Central Coast.
Stop by the Wine Regioin in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo. If you drive down PCH1 you will pass through Big Sur, Cambria, Morro Bay then Pismo Beach and other little beach towns along the coast. Those towns are so neat... From then on you mostly drive down 101 through inland along 101 until you get to Santa Barbara. There are some camp grounds along the beach areas there including ones in Ventura.

From there down to LA, it is more populated areas.

Once to get to LA, you will hit traffic again.

You can drive along PCH1 which is more drivable from Ventura down to San Diego. It will take much longer time but you will get to stop along all the beaches of Southern Cal, if you want to.

Please check the pages on our site that I listed here.
